New Suffolk Hamlet – First Successful Submarine Commissioned by the U.S. Navy

Irish mathematician, engineer and inventor, John Philip Holland, designed and built the first successful submarine to be commissioned by the U.S. Navy. He perfected his invention in trials in New Suffolk between 1899 and 1905. The innovative craft combined electric batteries for submerged travel and combustion engine power above the surface.  It was purchased by the Navy in 1900 and commissioned the USS Holland.
